Merely nine days after an intense and deadly earthquake rattled northern Italy, killing seven, two more struck in the same region…, killing at least another 15 people…
The first quake, a 5.8 magnitude, struck the Emilia-Romagna region around 9 am, and the second, a 5.6 tremor struck around noon. Both quakes follow an earlier May 20 quake of 6.0 which struck the area around Bologna.
“Factories, churches and warehouses reportedly collapsed, with the cities of Modena, Brescia and Milan among the most affected.” Some people were killed by falling buildings and some were trapped under the rubble. Massive communication and transportation problems complicated rescue and relief efforts.
“This is terror,” said a local mayor. “Everyone is on the street asking why? I’m asking that too.”
“Men in responsible positions… will point to calamities on land and sea—to the storms of wind, the floods, the earthquakes, the destruction by fire—as judgments indicating God’s displeasure because Sunday is not sacredly observed.
