Judge Sotomayor Nominated to U.S. Supreme Court · July 09, 2009
Sonia Sotomayor, a Latina of Puerto Rican descent has been nominated by U.S. President Barack Obama to the Supreme Court of the United States. She would replace David Souter who is retiring. Sotomayor was raised in New York City and has served on the federal bench since 1998, and would be the first Latina on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Sotomayor, a liberal, is a Roman Catholic who would replace an Episcopalian is she is confirmed, increasing the majority of Roman Catholics on the U.S. Supreme Court to six.
Sotomayor graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, and then from Princeton University summa cum laude, in 1976, then obtained her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1979, where she was an editor of the Yale Law Journal.
Sotomayor has made some rather controversial statements that seem to make light of the U.S. Constitution and reveal her judicial activism. A 2005 video of Sotomayor, has her saying that a “court of appeals is where policy is made.” She added: “And I know — I know this is on tape, and I should never say that because we don’t make law. I know. O.K. I know. I’m not promoting it. I’m not advocating it …”
Sotomayor also once said: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”
“Whether born from experience or inherent physiological or cultural differences,” she said later, regarding non-white, female judges, “our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging.”
A Supreme Court Justice is to uphold the Constitution, not set policy, not allow racial origins, or gender influence their interpretation of the venerable document. Sodomayor’s remarks appear to bode ill for the U.S. Constitution. Keep in mind that when push comes to shove, the U.S. Constitution will not stand in the way of Sunday laws. In a severe crisis, it will not be difficult for the Supreme Court, stacked with Roman Catholics and other Sunday keepers, to uphold Sunday laws as constitutional on some legal reasoning.
Remember, prophetic insight tells us that “When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near. Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, page 451.
The chart below reveals the dramatic shift from a clearly Protestant
dominated court to a clearly Roman Catholic dominated court over the last 33
years.
