Bishops Press Obama for Immigration Reform · June 22, 2009
On June 19, 2009 Zenit wrote that the U.S. bishops’ conference president Cardinal Francis George is pressing President Barack Obama to work with Congress for “comprehensive immigration reform by the end of 2009, and is promising to help.”
“The cardinal stated: ‘We urge respect and observance of all just laws, and we do not approve or encourage the illegal entry of anyone into our country. From a humanitarian perspective, however, our fellow human beings, who migrate to support their families, continue to suffer at the hands of immigration policies that separate them from family members and drive them into remote parts of the American desert, sometimes to their deaths. This suffering should not continue.’”
“He added, “Our society should no longer tolerate a status quo that perpetuates a permanent underclass of persons and benefits from their labor without offering them legal protections.’”
So the Catholic Church is continuing to press for legal protections for people who enter the United States illegally. The Catholic Church and many other churches, hospitals, social organizations, etc., have provided services to illegal immigrants, the church is pressing the government for legal protections that will in the end support illegal immigration. Rome favors illegal immigration because it brings many Roman Catholic’s into the U.S. They in turn have children in the U.S. who are automatically citizens, who eventually would vote. This works in favor of Rome.
“‘As a moral matter, we must resolve the legal status of those who are here without proper documentation so that they can fully contribute their talents to our nation’s economic, social and spiritual well being,’ the cardinal said.” In other words, the government should allow more immigrants to come in with some type of legal status. Note that apparently the bishops believe that taking jobs from legal Americans and sending much of the money south of the border is “contributing” to the nation’s economic well-being. Also note that the bishops want the mostly Roman Catholic immigrants to contribute to the “spiritual well being” of the United States. What could that mean? America’s religious culture is changing and becoming much more ecumenical. When it is time for oppressive laws concerning Sunday observance, will these immigrants “contribute” by pressing for them?
“‘The Catholic bishops of our country stand ready to assist in this effort,’ Cardinal George concluded.” The Catholic Bishops believe that immigration reform is a matter on which the church can work with the Obama Administration. After all, the Obama Administration is also dedicated to social welfare. But there are far reaching implications of a church working with, or pressuring the administration of any government. Rome’s power is increasing. Her usual plan is to co-opt governments to work with her in many different ways so that she is involved in as many areas as possible. This gives her more influence.
