Will Christ Come by 2050? · June 29, 2010
“Four in ten young Americans believe Jesus will return by 2050.” wrote the MailOnline. A poll “suggests the U.S. has lost none of the religious fervor it is renowned for.
“America is a nation founded by those fleeing religious persecution and 250 years on from its inception, it is home to a string of wacky beliefs, Evangelical groups and firebrand preachers.”
The poll by the Pew Research Centre questioned 1,546 adults aged 21-26 and asked them about a range of things they expected to happen by 2050. “They found 71 per cent expect cancer will be cured, 66 per cent expect artificial limbs to be working better than real ones and 53 per cent say ordinary people will travel in space. The article also said that 41 per cent of Americans, expect to see a single world currency in 40 years.
But it was the high number who confidently predict a Second Coming that raised eyebrows.
“David Silverman, spokesman for American Atheists, blamed poor education and ignorance.
He said: ‘This just shows how ignorant people are and that our school system does not teach critical thinking, something that Britain does… My prediction is that by 2050 that number will have shrunk significantly. We are not a more religious nation, we are a more brainwashed nation.’
He added: ‘They have been saying Jesus will return for 2,000 years, and I’m sure they will be saying he will return for the next 2,000’.
“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” 2 Peter 3:3-7.
